What is a Doula?

Doula is a greek word meaning women’s servant. A Doula is a trained professional who provides physical and emotional support, as well as education, before, during, and after birth. Birth and Postpartum Doulas offer support for new families during the life changing transition of having a baby. A Doula can help make the birth and postpartum period more enjoyable for not only the new mom, but her partner and family as well.

What are the benefits of hAVING a doula?

For centuries, women have been supported and surrounded by their community, family, and friends during pregnancy and beyond. Birth was (and still is in many countries) celebrated for the miracle that it is. Today, pregnancy and birth have become overly medical and you’re expected to just know what to do during the postpartum period with little support. Enter the Doula! Studies show that having a Birth Doula:

  • Decreases requests for pain medication by 60%

  • Reduces the use of Pitocin by 40%

  • Decreases the length of labor by 25%

  • Reduces the cesarean section rate by 50%

  • Increases the likelihood to report a positive birth experience

Having a Postpartum Doula can:

  • Help reduce postpartum mood disorders

  • Improve breastfeeding success
